Trip Overview
Overview

For many living in Slovenia, forest-to-table dining has been a way of life for centuries. Situated at the foot of the Alps, Slovenia is home to sweeping alpine landscapes and diverse flora—along with countless culinary experts who harvest and prepare these plants in a variety of ways. From a local grandmother known as the ambassador of dried pears to a world-renowned chef—to our guide’s mother-in-law, an experienced mushroom forager—these epicurean experts will help us munch our way through the forests, foothills, and pastures of Slovenia. We’ll season our own schnapps, take a crash course in beekeeping, and craft a charismatic cheese—all while learning the intricacies of collecting fresh herbs, plants, and fungi from a top-tier forager. Bring an open mind, a curious palate, and a healthy appetite for adventure, and you’re sure to experience the best forest-grown flavors of this alpine country.

Your trip leader Noah Charney also teaches our online course How to Steal the Mona Lisa: A History of Art Theft. Learn more and sign up here

Traveling Solo?

You’re in good company. Solo travelers typically make up about half of our small groups. With curiosity at the center of our experiences, there’s a natural camaraderie that develops over the course of a trip. We have two options for you:

Shared Room (subject to the latest Covid-19 guidelines): You’ll be matched with another solo traveler of the same gender.

Private Room: Have your own room, subject to availability, for a supplemental cost of $265 (for 2023 departures). After booking your trip, please request a private room when you fill out your traveler information form and we’ll add the option to your booking and final balance.

Arrival & Departure

Our trip begins in the afternoon of Day 1, when we will take a walking tour of Kamnik and then enjoy a welcome dinner together. We suggest that you arrive at Ljubljana-Brnik airport, Slovenia’s main airport (and just a 15 minute drive from Kamnik, where we will be based throughout this trip) in the morning so you have time to settle into our accommodations and meet your group and guide by early afternoon. Our trip concludes on the morning of Day 6. If leaving directly after our trip, we recommend departing anytime on Day 6.

Activity Level

Travelers should feel comfortable walking two to four miles over the course of each day, climbing stairs, and remaining on their feet for long periods of time. We will be doing many walks in the woods on mostly flat but sometimes uneven terrain, and there are at least two short hikes of around 30 minutes uphill.

Health & Safety

On one day of this trip, you’ll be in close proximity to bees alongside experienced beekeepers. If you have a severe allergy to bee venom, please reach out to us to see if this trip is right for you.

Foraging Expectations

When foraging for wild foods, various factors have to align to find exactly what you're looking for. It's important to keep in mind that we'll be at nature's whim, and even with the guidance of seasoned experts, there's a chance we won't find what we're looking for. No matter the outcome, it will be a fantastic opportunity to learn—and, without doubt, great fun.

When we get lucky- here are some things that we might find:

Spring Foraging: wild garlic, dandelion greens, forest dandelion, hop shoots, violets and other flowers, medicinal mushrooms, watercress and its relatives, elderflower

Fall Foraging: mushrooms, meadowsweet, plantain, nettles, thistles, rosehips, wild berries, wild roots

Trip FAQ

Most dietary restrictions can be accommodated, though in most cases ingredients can't be substituted or omitted from particular dishes. If you have a severe allergy, please contact us to find out if this is the right trip for you. The nature of this trip is focused on foraging and eating local, which means that a certain amount of “going with the flow” and eating what’s foraged and available is necessary. Vegetarian and vegan options can readily be accommodated, but exploratory eaters will likely get the most out of a trip of this kind.
