Summary[edit]
DescriptionDodecahedron Aventicum.jpg |
English: Bronze, hollow dodecahedron discovered in a house in the ruined Gallo-Roman city of Aventicum (Avenches, Switzerland). 1st or 2nd century CE. Picture taken in the archaeological museum of Avenches.
All twelve faces have circular openings with different radii (0.9 to 2.6 cm). Ten of these openings are surrounded by engraved circles. About sixty such dodecahedrons from the Roman period have been found in Gallo-Roman sites north of the Alps, most in the central and north-eastern parts of Gaul. The function is unknown. Because they have never been found in religious sites or buildings, a ceremonial function seems unlikely. More likely the dodecahedrons were measuring instruments, calendars, or part of a game. |
